FICUS PANDA BONSAI
The Ficus Panda Bonsai: Robustness and Modern Design
The Ficus Panda is a special cultivar of the more common Ficus Retusa or Microcarpa. It is immediately distinguished by its leaves: unlike the classic Ficus, the Panda has rounder, thicker, waxy leaves that are darker and brighter green. It is perhaps the ultimate indoor bonsai: it forgives watering mistakes, tolerates the dry air of our homes better than other plants, and is aesthetically very elegant. If you want a bonsai that looks like a modern sculpture and requires little maintenance, the Panda is your tree.
Origin & species
Native to tropical regions of Asia (Malaysia, Borneo), the Ficus Panda is an evergreen plant. Its most fascinating botanical feature, in addition to its leaf shape, is its ability to emit aerial roots from its branches that, upon reaching the ground, become new trunks, creating the "mangrove forest" or "Banyan style" effect. It is a vigorous plant that never really goes into complete rest when kept warm.
Exposure and Microclimate
It is a tropical plant, so it likes light and heat (above 15°C).
Indoors (Winter/Fall): Place it in front of a very bright window (south or west), but away from heaters that dry out the air.
Outside (Spring/Summer): From May to September, take it outside! The Ficus Panda bursts with health outdoors. Put it in a bright location, but not in the midday peak sun if it is not used to it, to avoid sunburn on the fleshy leaves.
Watering
Panda's thick leaves store water, so it withstands drought better than other bonsai trees.
Water when the soil is dry to the touch. Never leave standing water in the saucer (rot assured).
The expert's trick: Spray the foliage often with demineralized water. Ficus loves ambient humidity, and this also helps keep pests away and stimulate aerial roots.
Water quality
Use water at room temperature. Frigid tap water in winter can cause heat shock to tropical roots. If the water is lime, occasionally wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to remove the white patina and allow them to breathe.
Substrate
As it is often grown indoors, the substrate should drain but not dry out in an hour.
- Recommended mix: 50 percent Akadama (for structure), 30 percent Bonsai-ready potting soil (to nourish and retain moisture) and 20 percent Pumice.
- If you don't have time to make mixes, a good, high-quality bonsai ready potting soil is fine, as long as you check that it doesn't compact too much over time.
Repotting
This is done in late spring (May-June), when the plant is in full vegetative drive. Ficus tolerates drastic root cuts well.
Eliminate large roots going around the pot and favor fine roots. If you cut large roots, the plant will emit white latex: don't worry, it is its natural healer.
Fertilization
It is a hungry plant. Fertilize year-round if you keep it indoors in warm weather (reducing the doses in winter to once a month).
In spring and summer, use liquid fertilizer every 15 days or solid fertilizer every month to push vegetation. A good supply of nitrogen will make the leaves dark green and glossy.
Flowering and fruiting
Produces small spherical, green "figs" (syconia) that later turn reddish/black. They are not edible and in bonsai are inconspicuous, but a sign of good health.
Structure pruning
Ficus branches are flexible and rubbery. Training pruning can be done year-round, but best in spring.
Watch out for latex: When you cut, a sticky white liquid will come out. If it drips onto the bark and dries, it will leave an ugly black stain. Dab the cut immediately with cold water or paper towels.
Maintenance pruning
To keep the "cushions" of leaves compact, you must top regularly. When a twig has made 5-6 leaves, cut back leaving 2 leaves.
If the bonsai loses its internal shape (empties out), do a defoliation in June (remove the large leaves leaving the petiole) to stimulate new internal buds.
Binding & folding
Ficus binds well, but branches swell at lightning speed. The wire can become ingrown within 3-4 weeks in summer! Check it very often.
We recommend tying while the branches are still green and flexible.
Diseases and pests
The Ficus Panda is a tank, but it has two enemies at home:
- Mealybug: White flecks or brown scuds on the branches and under the leaves. Typical of dry, warm environments.
- Red spider mite: If the air is too dry.
- Leaf drop: Often not a disease, but stress from change of location or cold air currents.
Winter & protections
Absolutely indoors (or heated greenhouse) if you live where the temperature drops below 10-12°C. The cold kills it. However, look for a bright room, not a dark corner, otherwise it will lose all its leaves.
Annual calendar
- January-February: Bright indoor location, moderate water, leaf cleaning.
- March-April: Start more intensive fertilization, prepare for release.
- May-June: Move outside (gradual), repotting, defoliation.
- July-August: Heavy watering, fertilizing, misting.
- September: Moving back indoors (before nights drop below 15°C).
- October-December: Indoor maintenance, mealybug control.

Frequently Asked Questions about Ficus Panda
Just brought home it has lost many leaves, is it dying?
Probably not. Ficus is "habit-forming" and hates changes in light and location. If you move it from the nursery to home, it reacts by losing leaves. Find a bright spot for it and don't move it again. It will recover in a few weeks.
How do I grow aerial roots?
It needs very high ambient humidity (almost 100%). You can try wrapping the trunk or branches with moist sphagnum moss or put the tree in a clear plastic "mini greenhouse" for a few weeks in summer.
Why are the leaves sticky?
If the leaves are sticky and shiny, 99% there is mealybug. Look closely under the leaves and on the branches: you will see small brown plaques or white flakes. Treat immediately.
