Presentation
The Japanese Pepper (Zanthoxylum piperitum) is an indoor bonsai with tiny, pinnate foliage of a bright green, and a trunk that branches naturally. The low white ceramic bowl highlights its compact canopy. It is suitable as a party favor for ceremonies, weddings and corporate events, even for those without experience with bonsai.
Technical characteristics
- Botanical species: Zanthoxylum piperitum (Japanese Pepper)
- Plant height: about 20-25 cm
- Pot dimensions: diameter 20 cm x height 7 cm
- Pot material: low white ceramic bowl
- Exposure: bright indoors, without direct sunlight
- Care difficulty: low
How to care for it
Place the Japanese Pepper in a bright indoor environment, near a window but sheltered from direct rays during the central hours of the day. It tolerates home temperatures well, between 15 and 22 °C. In the warm season it can stay outdoors in a sheltered, semi-shaded position. Avoid cold drafts and proximity to heat sources such as radiators.
Water when the first layer of soil begins to dry out, keeping the substrate moist but never soggy. In summer the frequency increases, even every other day; in winter reduce it. The low bowl holds little soil, so check the moisture often and use room-temperature water.
Fertilize from March to October every two or three weeks with a liquid bonsai fertilizer, halving the indicated doses. Suspend fertilizing in the cold months, when growth slows down.
Prune the new shoots after they have produced four or five leaves, reducing them to two, to keep the canopy dense and tidy. The Japanese Pepper responds well to pruning and produces dense branching. Repot every two years in spring, slightly shortening the roots and using a specific draining substrate for bonsai.

Frequently asked questions
Q: Can the Japanese Pepper be kept indoors?
A: Yes, it is a species suitable for indoors. It should be placed in a very bright spot, in front of a window, but protected from direct sun during the central hours. It keeps its foliage all year round if temperatures stay between 15 and 22 °C. In summer it can spend a few weeks outdoors in a sheltered, semi-shaded position.
Q: How often should it be watered?
A: It depends on the season and the environment. Check the soil with a finger: when the first layer dries out, water it. In summer it may need water every other day, in winter much less. The low bowl holds little soil, so check the moisture regularly and avoid both waterlogging and prolonged drought.
Q: Is it a suitable party favor even for those who don't know bonsai?
A: Yes. The Japanese Pepper is among the most tolerant species and requires simple care. Each plant comes with a botanical card that explains position, watering and pruning step by step. It is a practical choice for weddings, baptisms, communions and corporate events, appreciated even by those who have never grown plants.
Q: Is the plant I receive identical to the one in the photo?
A: The photo is indicative and shows a typical specimen of the same variety. As it is a mass-produced party favor, each piece has the same pot dimensions and the same species, but the exact plant varies slightly in shape and branching. You will still receive a bonsai very similar in style and size to the one depicted.
