Presentation
Bonsai of Ulmus parvifolia, the Chinese elm, with a moving trunk and a compact canopy of small, serrated leaves. It is one of the species most widely used as an indoor bonsai because it copes well with life in an apartment and responds quickly to pruning. It stands about 25-30 cm tall and is suitable for beginners, but also makes a fine corporate gift, event present or wedding favour.
Technical characteristics
- Species: Ulmus parvifolia (Chinese elm)
- Style: informal upright, sinuous trunk
- Plant height: about 25-30 cm
- Pot dimensions: 18 x 12 x h. 6 cm
- Pot material: blue glazed ceramic, rectangular shape
- Position: bright indoors, also outdoors in partial shade during the mild season
- Care difficulty: low
How to care for it
It needs plenty of light all year round: in front of a bright window, away from radiators and draughts. Water when the substrate starts to dry on the surface, soaking until water runs out of the drainage holes, more frequently from May to September. The elm is semi-deciduous: between October-November and February-March it may carry little foliage, and this is perfectly normal.
For more on the care of this species, see the complete botanical care sheet.
Frequently asked questions
Is the plant I receive identical to the one photographed?
No. The photo shows a representative specimen: these plants are grown in batches, so you will receive a Chinese elm of the same variety and style, in the same blue rectangular pot 18x12x h.6 cm and of very similar size, with the normal differences in branching from one specimen to another.
How much does an indoor bonsai like this cost?
This Chinese elm falls within the bracket up to 69 euro, glazed ceramic pot included. The price covers the already shaped 25-30 cm plant, its pot and the botanical care sheet with growing instructions, with nothing else to buy on arrival.
Why has my elm lost some of its leaves in winter?
The Chinese elm is semi-deciduous: in the cold months, roughly from November to March, it thins its canopy and may arrive with little foliage. This is neither a flaw nor a sign of stress. As the days lengthen, growth resumes and the canopy fills out again in spring.
