Caring for a Spruce bonsai tree requires some specific attention, but with a few steps, it is possible to keep it healthy and vigorous even after the holidays. Here is a comprehensive guide to ensuring the best condition for your fir bonsai tree.
1. Exposure to light
Fir prefers environments with plenty of light, but avoid direct exposure to the sun during the hottest hours of the day, especially in summer. If possible, place it in an outdoor area during warm weather, where it can benefit from indirect light, while in winter it can be placed in a bright, cool room.
2. Temperature
This bonsai is cold-hardy and can tolerate even cold temperatures, as it grows in cold climates in the wild. However, it is advisable to protect it from intense frost, which could damage its roots. At home, keep it away from direct heat sources, such as radiators or fireplaces, to prevent dry air from damaging it.
3. Watering
Fir needs constantly moist soil, with no water stagnation. Check the moisture in the substrate, and water with a watering can with a shower rosette, only when it feels dry to the touch, keeping the soil moist but not excessively wet. Use water that is non-calcareous and preferably at room temperature to avoid temperature shock.
4. Moisture
Because fir bonsai prefers a moist environment, misting the leaves occasionally will help maintain good humidity. This practice is especially useful in the winter months, when the heating in the house tends to dry out the air.
5. Pruning
Pruning is important to maintain the shape and firmness of the fir bonsai tree. Maintenance pruning is done with a scissors specifically for twigs, during spring or early fall, removing dry branches or branches that are sticking out of the desired silhouette. Root pruning should be done during repotting, which is generally done every two to three years.
6. Fertilization
During the growing season (between early spring through early summer), feed the bonsai with a organo-Mineral fertilizer specifically for bonsai trees to be applied only a couple of times. Suspend fertilization during the fall and winter, when the plant is in its resting phase.
7. Repotting
Repotting is recommended every two to three years, preferably in spring, to provide a new substrate that promotes drainage and oxygenation of the roots. Use a bonsai-specific potting soil composed of akadama, pumice and a small portion of organic soil.
By following these care tips, your Spruce bonsai tree will thrive, maintaining its compact foliage and healthy appearance for many years.
The plant is delivered along with a botanical card full of care tips, which includes suggestions on displaying, watering, and fertilizing, making it easy to care for the bonsai even for the less experienced.
Please note that the product photo is representative only: the bonsai you receive will be of the same variety, style, pot, and size, but each fir bonsai is unique and retains its own characteristics, making it even more special.
