Specimen of Japanese pepper (Zanthoxylum piperitum) about 29 years old, with very fine pinnate foliage and branches spreading horizontally well beyond the pot's outline. The trunk is short and thickened, with a 7 cm nebari and pale bark. This is a plant for those looking for an already formed bonsai, not raw material to be styled.

How to care for it

Japanese pepper needs abundant light: from April to October it does well outdoors in bright partial shade, while below 4-5 °C it should be moved to a cool, bright place. The soil must never dry out completely, so in summer it may need watering every day, always checking the substrate with a finger. Watch out for the thorns along the branches when cleaning the canopy.
