Presentation
Specimen of Japanese pepper (Zanthoxylum piperitum) with an estimated age of 25-28 years, short and deeply furrowed trunk that splits into two woody masses at the base. The 6 cm nebari is well anchored on the surface of the substrate and the canopy, broad and flattened, is made up of tiny, aromatic foliage. Suited to those looking for an already well-structured outdoor bonsai.

How to care for it
Japanese pepper needs to stay outdoors all year round, in a bright position, sheltered from prolonged frost below -2/-3 °C and from dry winter wind. With only 5.5 cm of depth the pot dries out quickly: from June to August check the substrate every day and water when the top centimetre feels dry, cutting back markedly in winter.

Frequently asked questions
Is the plant I receive the one in the photo?
Yes, it is a one-of-a-kind specimen photographed live. As it is a living plant, the foliage may look different on delivery due to natural growth, pruning, pinching or seasonal changes: trunk, nebari and styling, however, remain those of the specimen in the photo.
What are the overall measurements with the pot?
The plant alone is 22 cm tall; the rectangular unglazed stoneware pot measures 26.5 x 20.5 cm with a height of 5.5 cm. The overall width is determined by the canopy, which extends beyond the edges of the container. The total weight is 3.3 kg.
Can I keep it indoors?
No, it is an outdoor bonsai. Japanese pepper is deciduous and needs the seasonal variation in light and temperature: balcony, terrace or garden are the right places for it. Indoors, with dry air and little light, it drops its leaves and weakens rapidly.
