Presentation

Small-leaved myrtle specimen (Myrtus microphylla) 58 cm tall, with a 30 cm nebari and a base divided into several woody columns with pale, deeply fluted bark. The canopy is compact, built on broad pads that extend beyond the width of the pot. A myrtle bonsai of this size is meant for anyone looking for a display plant on a low table or a fixed spot on the terrace, rather than a subject to be moved often: it weighs 50 kg.

How to care for it

Myrtle wants to be outdoors all year round, in full sun: that is what keeps the leaves tiny and the foliage as dense as you see in this canopy. In summer, with such a wide but shallow volume of soil (a 17 cm deep pot), check the substrate every day and water as soon as the surface dries out; in winter water less and protect the tree from prolonged frost, below around -4 °C.

For more on the care of this species, see the complete botanical care sheet.

Frequently asked questions

Is the plant I receive the one in the photo?

Yes, this is a one-of-a-kind specimen and the photo shows the exact tree that will be sent. As it is a living plant, the foliage may look different from the picture due to natural growth, pruning, pinching or seasonal changes. Trunk structure, nebari and pot remain as shown.

Can I keep it indoors?

No. Myrtle is a Mediterranean outdoor species and should be grown in the garden, on a terrace or balcony all year round. Indoors it loses vigour, stretches its internodes and becomes prone to scale insects. In winter simply move it to a spot sheltered from cold winds and the hardest frosts.

How much space does it need and how much does it weigh?

The oval pot measures 56 x 45 cm with a height of 17 cm, while the canopy overhangs the rims: allow at least 70 cm of free surface. The combined weight of plant, substrate and pot is 50 kg, so it is best to decide where to place this microphylla bonsai before delivery.
