Serissa bonsai in white square pot

Presentation

Serissa foetida, also known as Serissa japonica, is an evergreen shrub with tiny leaves that stays compact in a pot and branches out densely. This specimen stands around 20 cm tall and grows in a white square pot measuring 15x15 cm. It is a popular choice as a wedding favour for weddings, christenings and ceremonies, as well as for corporate gifts.

How to care for it

Serissa wants plenty of light but not direct midday sun, and it dislikes being moved about: once you have found the right spot, it is best left there. Keep the substrate just moist, never soaking and never completely dry, watering more often from May to September and cutting back in winter, when the temperature should stay above 10 °C.

Frequently asked questions

Will I receive exactly the plant in the photo?

No. As this is a wedding favour produced in batches, the photograph shows a representative specimen. The plant shipped is of the same species, Serissa foetida, with the same white square pot 15x15 cm and a very similar height of around 20 cm, but the pattern of the branches varies from plant to plant.

How much room does it take up on the guest table?

The base takes up 15x15 cm, the canopy slightly more, with an overall height of around 20 cm including the 7.5 cm tall pot. A size that sits easily on a place setting or on a favours table while remaining clearly visible.

Should it be kept indoors or outdoors?

Indoors throughout the winter, in front of a bright window and away from radiators and draughts. From spring to early autumn it can stay outdoors on a balcony or terrace in a spot sheltered from strong sun. Whoever receives it can keep it indoors all year round if there is enough light. If you are wondering what plant this is, it is a classic evergreen bonsai species widely grown indoors.
