What it is used for
This is the tool you reach for when the bonsai comes out of its pot. The three tines tease out the root ball, separate tangled roots and remove old soil without tearing the fine feeder roots, while the spatula blade at the other end runs along the inner walls of the pot to release the root ball. It is also useful outside repotting time: for breaking up the surface crust of the substrate, cleaning up the nebari and finishing the surface after repotting.
Technical features
- Material: steel
- Overall length: 255 mm
- Head with three curved tines for teasing out roots
- Opposite end with pointed spatula for freeing the root ball
- One-piece body, no added parts
- Two-in-one multipurpose tool
Who it is suitable for
Recommended for intermediate level and for those who already have some experience. Repotting is a delicate operation and working on the roots with the rake calls for a light hand: pull following the natural direction of the roots, never across them.
In practice it comes into play in late winter and early spring, when most broadleaves and conifers are repotted. Its 255 mm length handles medium-sized pots well, while a shorter model is preferable for mame.
