Introduction

The Trident Maple — Acer Buergerianum — is one of the most beloved species in Japanese bonsai, and one look at this specimen is enough to understand why. The trunk is something extraordinary: massive, twisted, marked by time, with roots that intertwine into a wide and well-exposed nebari. The trilobed leaves, small and bright green, form a dense and harmonious canopy that perfectly balances the power of the lower section. This is a bonsai that tells of years of patient work and natural growth, a piece that draws the eye and holds it.

With an estimated age of 22–24 years, this maple has reached an evident maturity in both its wood and ramification. It is a specimen designed for those seeking something authentic, not the usual off-the-shelf bonsai.

How to care for it

Position: the Trident Maple lives outdoors all year round. It loves direct sunlight, but on the hottest summer days — above 35 °C — it is best to move it to a position where it receives filtered light during the central hours. In winter it tolerates cold well, but if temperatures drop below -3 °C for prolonged periods, it is advisable to protect the pot, for example by wrapping it or placing it in a cold greenhouse.

Watering: the substrate should be watered thoroughly every time the surface feels dry to the touch. In summer, with the heat and full foliage, watering may be needed even twice a day. Water must flow freely from the drainage holes; waterlogging is the number one enemy. In winter the frequency is reduced, but the root ball should never be allowed to dry out completely.

Fertilizing: from early spring to late autumn, with slow-release solid organic fertilizer every 3–4 weeks. Fertilizing is suspended during the hottest months of July and August, and during winter. In autumn, a fertilizer richer in potassium and phosphorus prepares the plant for winter and promotes the spectacular leaf colors.

Pruning: structural pruning is carried out in late winter, before the buds begin to swell. During the growing season, new shoots are pinched back when they have developed 4–5 pairs of leaves, shortening them to 1–2 pairs. This constant work is what keeps the canopy compact and well-proportioned. Partial or full defoliation is possible on healthy and vigorous specimens, in June.

Repotting: every 2–3 years, in late winter or early spring, when the buds are swollen but not yet open. The ideal substrate is a well-draining mix of akadama and pumice (70/30). At the time of repotting, root pruning is performed, reducing approximately one third of the root system.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Does the Trident Maple lose its leaves in winter?
A: Yes, it is a deciduous species. In autumn the leaves turn orange and red before falling. During winter the plant remains bare, revealing the structure of the trunk and branches — which in this specimen is truly remarkable. In spring, budding is rapid and vigorous, with fresh light green leaves.

Q: Can I keep this bonsai indoors?
A: No, the Trident Maple is an outdoor species that needs to experience the seasons. The winter cold cycle is essential for its health. Keeping it indoors would lead to a progressive weakening of the plant. It should be placed on a balcony, terrace, or in a garden, where it receives natural light and air.

Q: Do the leaves change color in autumn?
A: Absolutely yes, and it is one of the most beautiful moments. The trilobed leaves of Acer Buergerianum turn shades of orange, red, and bronze before falling. The intensity of the colors depends on the temperature difference between day and night: the more pronounced it is, the more vivid the colors will be. One more reason to keep it outdoors.

Q: How is a specimen this large packed for shipping?
A: We use reinforced packaging specifically designed to protect plants of this size. The pot is secured inside the box, the canopy is protected with soft material, and everything is fastened to prevent movement during transit. We ship via express courier in 24/48h to minimize travel time.
