What it is for

It is used to work deadwood. The steel bristles remove residual bark and soft tissue from jin and shari areas, bringing out the grain of the hardwood beneath. Use it after stripping the bark with pliers and gouges, always following the direction of the fibres; it is also handy for cleaning up aged wood before applying jubilee liquid or lime sulphur.

Who it is for

A tool for experienced bonsai growers. Metal bristles work aggressively, and on wood that is still too fresh, or on a live vein brushed by mistake, the damage is immediate: you need a steady hand and a clear idea of where the jin ends and the living tissue begins.

In practice it comes into play when creating jin on conifers, cleaning shari on junipers and pines, and during all annual deadwood maintenance, when raised fibres need to be tidied up. The 10 mm width allows you to reach into narrow hollows.
