What it is for
It is used to remove medium-thick branches at their base. The oblique blades cut in and leave an elongated, teardrop-shaped wound that the tree closes over more quickly than the clean cut of a straight cutter. This is the tool you reach for when you need to open up space within the structure, remove a badly placed branch or thin out an overcrowded pad without leaving visible stubs on the trunk.
Technical features
- Material: steel
- Length: 180 mm
- Cut: oblique, concave blades producing a teardrop wound
- Build quality: semi-professional
- Use: fairly thick branches on Shohin and small to medium-sized bonsai
Who it is suitable for
Intermediate and experienced level. Anyone who has already styled a few trees knows how much the type of scar left behind matters: with this cutter the callus forms along the direction of the fibres and the mark disappears sooner.
In everyday practice it is used during late-winter structural pruning, when cleaning up inner branches and whenever a pad needs correcting. Its 180 mm size makes it easy to handle even when working inside the canopy of a Shohin, where a longer tool would be awkward to leverage. We recommend drying and oiling it after use on resinous conifers.
