Presentation

Downy oak (Quercus pubescens) about 30 years old, 50 cm tall, with a barked trunk and an 8 cm nebari at the base. The canopy is compact and rounded, with the lobed leaves typical of the species. An outdoor specimen, suited to those who already grow native broadleaf trees and are looking for an oak with mature bark.

Technical features

  • Species: Quercus pubescens (downy oak)
  • Age: about 30 years
  • Height of the plant alone: 50 cm
  • Nebari: 8 cm
  • Pot: round, diam. 28 x h. 10.5 cm
  • Pot material: green glazed stoneware
  • Total weight: 7 kg
  • Position: outdoors, full sun with shade during the hottest summer hours
  • Care difficulty: medium

How to care for it

The downy oak lives outdoors all year round and should never be brought inside. Keep the substrate moist but never soggy: with a shallow 10.5 cm pot the water runs out quickly and in July and August you may need to water twice a day, while in winter, with dry leaves still on the branches, just a few waterings a month are enough.

Frequently asked questions

Is the plant I receive the one in the photo?

Yes, this is a one-of-a-kind specimen and the photo shows the exact plant that will be shipped. As it is a living plant, the foliage may look different on delivery due to growth, pruning, pinching or normal seasonal changes: structure, trunk and pot remain as shown.

How much space does it need?

The round pot measures 28 cm in diameter and the plant reaches 50 cm in height from the rim, for an overall footprint of around 60 cm. An outdoor side table, a wide windowsill or a garden shelf will do; the total weight of 7 kg calls for a stable surface.

Why do some leaves look brown in the photo?

The downy oak is marcescent: the leaves dry out but stay attached to the branches for much of the winter, falling as the new shoots push through in spring. This is normal behaviour for the species, not a sign of stress, and it adds to the look of the canopy during the cold season.
