Presentation
The Privet (Ligustrum ovalifolium) is a species that wins over bonsai enthusiasts with its vitality and ability to form dense, compact canopies in a relatively short time. Native to East Asia but perfectly acclimated to the Mediterranean basin, it is distinguished by its bright green oval leaves that give the bonsai a lush, energetic appearance. This specimen, at approximately 22 years old, has developed a robust trunk and a well-distributed nebari that convey solidity and character.

How to care for it
Position: the Privet is an outdoor bonsai that loves light. Keep it in a position where it receives direct sun for most of the day, protecting it during the hottest summer hours with light shading. In winter it tolerates moderate cold well, but it should be protected from prolonged frosts — a non-woven fabric sheet or a sheltered position is sufficient.
Watering: water abundantly when the soil begins to dry on the surface. Privet does not like stagnant water but neither does it like prolonged drought: in summer it may be necessary to water every day, while in winter irrigation becomes much less frequent. Good drainage in the substrate is essential to keep the roots healthy.
Fertilization: fertilize regularly from March to October with a slow-release organic fertilizer, every 3-4 weeks. In spring, you can alternate with a balanced fertilizer to encourage vegetative growth. Suspend fertilization during the hottest months of July and August and during the winter.
Pruning: the Privet responds beautifully to pruning and back-buds vigorously. Structural pruning is performed in late winter, before the growth restart. During the growing season, pinch back new shoots leaving 2-3 pairs of leaves when the branches have produced 6-8: this way the canopy thickens and maintains the compact shape you see in the photo.
Repotting: repotting should be carried out every 2-3 years, approximately in late winter or early spring, using a well-draining substrate (pure akadama or mixed with pumice). Take advantage of repotting to examine the root system and remove dead or excessively long roots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can the Privet bonsai be kept in an apartment?
A: No, the Privet is an outdoor bonsai in every respect. It needs direct sunlight and the natural succession of seasons to grow healthily. Keeping it indoors would quickly lead to the weakening of the plant with leaf loss and dry branches. Place it on a balcony, terrace, or in the garden.
Q: My Privet's leaves are turning yellow, what should I do?
A: Yellowing of the leaves can depend on several factors: excess or lack of water, lack of fertilization, or insufficient exposure to light. First, check the watering schedule, ensuring the substrate drains well. If the problem persists, check the roots at the next repotting to rule out root rot.
Q: Does this bonsai lose its leaves in winter?
A: Ligustrum ovalifolium is semi-evergreen: in mild climates it maintains most of its foliage, while in colder areas it may lose part of its leaves during the winter. This is completely natural behavior. With the arrival of spring, the plant sprouts vigorously, rebuilding the canopy in a few weeks.
Q: How often should this specimen be pruned?
A: Maintenance pruning is performed continuously during the growing season by pinching back shoots that are too long. Structural pruning, which is more incisive, is done once a year in late winter. Privet is a very generous species in its response to pruning, so do not fear to intervene: it will sprout vigorously even from old buds.
