Presentation

Japanese black pine (Pinus thunbergii) about 25 years old, with a trunk that rises at a slant and straightens towards the apex, bark already fissured and clearly separated pads. The 7 cm nebari is visible at the surface, with roots spreading towards the front. A specimen for those who have been growing conifers for some time and know how to manage candles and needles.

How to care for it

The black pine wants direct sun all day long and a substrate that dries out quickly: water when the surface layer is dry, more frequently from June to August and sparingly during winter, when the plant still stays outdoors. On this species we prefer a solid organic fertiliser, applied in spring and resumed in late summer to support the second flush.

Can I keep it indoors?

No. The Japanese black pine is an outdoor conifer and needs the full seasonal cycle, including winter cold. It should be placed in the garden, on a terrace or balcony in a sunny, airy spot. Indoors it loses vigour within a few weeks.
