What it is for

It collects the water running out of the planter's drainage holes. It keeps the supporting surface dry when the box sits on a balcony, a windowsill or an indoor floor, but it is just as useful outdoors because it prevents soil and limescale stains on stone. It was designed around the smooth resin Fenice planter box 100 cm (SKU CASFENICE100), so the base rests flat on it without overhanging.

How to use it

Place it on the surface, then lower the 100 cm box onto it, matching it with the recess in the bottom. After watering, let the water drain for ten or fifteen minutes, then empty out any standing water: water left for days rots the finer roots and, in winter, can freeze inside the tray.

If the planter stands in the shade or on a delicate floor, we suggest adding two spacers under the base of the box, so air can circulate and the wood or terracotta underneath does not stay damp. For cleaning, water and a non-abrasive sponge are enough; limescale deposits come off with diluted vinegar.

Does it also suit other 100 cm planters?

It is designed for the smooth resin Fenice planter box 100 cm, code CASFENICE100, and fits that one perfectly. On other models of the same length it can work only if the base is no wider than 45 cm, but the fit will not necessarily be as stable as with its matching planter.

How much water can it hold?

The raised rim and the ribs on the bottom hold the normal run-off from watering a one-metre planter. It is not intended as a water reservoir: it should be emptied when the level rises, especially after persistent rain or if the box stays outdoors all season.

Is it frost and sun resistant?

Resin withstands temperature swings and sunlight without cracking the way terracotta would. The only precaution concerns water left inside during winter: as it freezes it expands and pushes against the walls. Emptied and placed on a level surface, the drip tray gets through the cold season without any problems.
