What it is for

This is the cutter you reach for when the cut has to stay clean right into the wood. On roots it comes into its own at repotting time, when you need to shorten without shredding the tissue and without leaving stubs that later rot; the 19 mm blade and long handles provide the leverage required even on thick, woody roots. The same edge cuts branches and small trunks of good section with precision, and this is where the tool reveals its second nature: splitting the wood to separate a live sap vein from the dead part, a preliminary step before extreme bending and jin and shari work.

Who it is for

A tool for experienced growers. Splitting a live vein does not forgive errors of judgement: you must first understand where the sap flow runs and how far the wood can be opened without compromising the branch.

In everyday practice it comes into play when repotting medium and large specimens, for reducing the root mass and correcting the nebari, and during structural work on conifers, when preparing a trunk for bending by dividing the dead wood from the active part. We recommend drying and oiling the blades after every session on roots: damp soil and steel do not get along.
