What it is for

The knob cutter bites into the wood by hollowing it out: the rounded head enters the trunk and removes the branch collar, leaving a concave hollow instead of a stub. This is the step that determines how the scar will look. When you permanently remove a branch growing from the trunk, this concave cut allows the callus to close over flat, without the unsightly bulges left by ordinary shears or a flush cut.

It is also used to tidy up old, badly cut stubs and to prepare the area before applying wound sealant.
