What it is for
The saw comes into play when a branch is too thick for the concave cutter or the shears. It is used to remove large-diameter limbs, lower a trunk, or prepare a stub to be turned later into jin or uro. On a 210 mm tool, the toothed blade works on the pull stroke and cuts through hard, seasoned wood without tearing the fibres, leaving a clean cut that can then be refined with the knob cutter before sealing with wound paste. The longer stroke makes cutting faster on larger sections.
Technical features
- Satin steel blade, total length 210 mm
- Tooth pattern for cutting green and dry wood
- Folding mechanism: the blade retracts into the handle
- Anatomical two-tone non-slip grip
- Semi-professional quality
Who it is for
It suits the advanced hobbyist and anyone working with prebonsai material or yamadori, where structural work is frequent and the diameters involved are substantial. The folding design makes it easy to carry into the field.
In practice it is used during the styling stage, when deciding which limb to remove, and for hard late-winter pruning on broadleaves such as elm, hornbeam and olive. We recommend wiping a film of oil onto the blade after every session: the satin finish holds up well, but the resinous sap of pines and junipers tends to clog the teeth.
