Presentation

This kermes oak bonsai (Quercus coccifera) stands 65 cm tall and rests on a 14 cm nebari. The trunk rises at a slant, with a sharp curve at the base and deeply fissured grey bark that contrasts with the small, leathery foliage. It is a specimen suited to anyone looking for a collector's oak, to be kept outdoors all year round.

Technical details

How to care for it

The kermes oak needs to stay outdoors all year round, in full sun: it is a Mediterranean species that, with too little light, stretches its internodes and loses compactness. Water when the top layer of soil begins to dry out, frequently from June to August and far more sparingly in winter, avoiding any waterlogging in the 12 cm deep container.

For more on caring for this species, see the complete botanical care sheet.

Frequently asked questions

Is the plant I receive the one in the photo?

Yes, this is a one-of-a-kind specimen and the photo shows the exact plant that will be sent. As it is a living plant, the foliage may look different on delivery due to natural growth, pruning, pinching or seasonal changes. The trunk, nebari and pot remain those shown in the image.

How much space and weight should I allow for?

The oval pot takes up 40 x 33.5 cm and the plant reaches 65 cm in height, so the overall footprint exceeds 75 cm from the ground if placed on a small table. The weight is 16.3 kg: it is best to provide a sturdy surface and, when moving it, to lift it with two people holding the pot.

Can I keep this oak indoors?

No. The kermes oak is an outdoor tree and should be kept on a balcony, terrace or in the garden even in winter, sheltered from prolonged freezing winds. Indoors it suffers from dry air and poor light, with progressive leaf drop and branches that weaken within a few weeks.
