BOTANICAL CARD OF BONSAI
Common Name: CYCAS - Family: CYCADACEAE
ORIGIN:
Native to southern Japan, this genus is made up of about 15 different-looking species. The Cycas are dioecious plants (there is the male and the female) among the most ancient, it is said to have existed for about 150 million years. The Cycas is characterized by the absence of branches and leaves arranged in an apical tuft, which grows every year by drying the old leaves, which by cutting them allow the trunk to grow in height.
PRUNING:
The Cycas have a fairly superficial root system that does not generally require severe pruning, which in any case must be carried out in the summer or in any case in hot periods of the year. During the following repottings, limit yourself to slightly shortening the smaller roots.
REPOT:
Every 3-4 years in late spring, with 60% soil and 40% sand coarse or equivalent material.
WATERING:
Water only when the soil is completely dry, it is a species that tolerates the lack of water very well.
FERTILIZATION:
From spring to autumn 1 time every 30 days. The plant is very fond of iron-based products to be administered 3-4 times in spring-summer, the iron helps to make the leaves bright green.
EXPOSURE:
In the apartment she lives well in very bright places, also helping her with sprays on the hair. If kept outdoors avoid sunny exposures all day and in winter repair in case of temperatures close to 0.
BINDINGS:
The appearance of the plant can be improved by using ligatures or tie rods that bend the tips of the leaves downwards. The same result is obtained by repeatedly acting with the fingers on the still tender leaves.
